India's only Impregnable fort

Chitradurga Fort tour takes you to a magnificent fort from the 17th century and is located 200 KMs north of Bangalore. It is a fascinating experience to explore this fort with its seven concentric fortification walls, 19 gateways, 38 posterior entrances, 35 secret pathways, four invisible passages, water tanks and 2000 watch towers! The fort is equipped with an amazing rain harvesting system and has a unique gun powder grinding machine. It is also the location where “Onake Obavva" the heroic lady displayed an act of valor.

Incredibly engineered Fort

Chitradurga is an ancient town and was part of the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka the Great, in the 3rd century BC. Chitradurga Fort covers an area of 1500 acres and its walls cover a distance of 8 KMs. The fort was built between the 17th and 18th centuries by several Kings and dynasties ranging from Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Nayaks, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar and Hyder Ali. Upon reaching the top, other than magnificent views, various passages, a citadel, a mosque, warehouses for grains and oil, water reservoirs and 18 temples greet us. Chitradurga is supposed to have never suffered from any water shortage. The several rain harvesting structures are still existing for a closer look.

Legend of Onake Obavva

Chitradurga Fort has its share of heroic tales about how many a brave soldier defended it from enemies. The most heroic act to protect this fort was performed by an ordinary woman named Obavva. She was not a soldier and was in fact the wife of a soldier. One day in the 17th century she was keeping guard of a small opening in the Fort while her husband had taken a lunch break. While fetching water, she heard sounds from the opening. To her horror she noticed Enemy soldiers malling their way from the narrow opening. With great presence of mind she hid behind the opening and hit each soldier who emerged from the opening on his head. She used an “Onake“, a wooden rod used for pounding paddy. By the time her husband returned she had piled up bodies of Enemy soldiers! This act of valor earned her the epithet “Onake Obavva”.

Gun powder grinding machine

An amazing artifact to be seen is the gun powder grinding machine. It is a quadruple mill with four massive grinders with teeth and slots. These were pulled by Elephants or Bullocks in rotating motion. It was used by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan to make gun powder.
