Ancient Port & Capital of Pallava Kingdom
Mahabalipuram & Kanchipuram tour is a one day trip from Chennai to the 8th century twin wonders of Pallava architecture. We will cover the magnificent Kanchipuram temples of Ekambareswar & Kailashnath. After that we visit the ancient sea port of Mahabalipuram and visit the legendary rock cut structures lie Arjuna’s penance, Five Rathas and the iconic Shore temple which served literally as the beacon for sea farers from the 8th century onwards.
Kanchipuram Temples
Kanchipuram was the capital of the medieval South Indian Kingdom of Pallavas. The Pallavas were instrumental in the transition from rock-cut architecture to stone temples. We will visit Ekambareswar and Kailashnathar temples. These were built in 600 AD and are magnificent specimens of the Pallava style of architecture. Ekambareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the five major Shiva temples or Pancha Bootha Sthalams (each representing a natural element). This temple represents the element - Earth. Kailasanathar temple was built by Pallava king Narasimhavarman II and is the biggest sandstone temple in the world.
Mahabalipuram
We will explore Mahabalipuram, an ancient town known to be a trading post during Roman Times. Ships sailing from South India to South East Asia used to depart from the Mahabalipuram port. The legendary Marco Polo referred to Mahabalipuram as the city of 7 pagodas. The Shore temple is the only 1 of those magnificent 7 temples, which have survived the ravages of time.

Strenghening local community
The local communities of Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram are economically vulnerable. People of Kanchipuram are dependent on the temple economy for their livelihood. Many of them run small shops or have set up stalls to sell prayer related goods. SIlk weaving is another means of livehihood. Most of them are using handlooms. Mahabalipuram is the proud recipient of world's first stone carving city declaration. However, the next generation of sculptors are moving to the cities for jobs threatening a slow death for this fine art. Our company is helping both these communities by training & employing local guides and by procuring their wares to strengthen their livelihood.
