The story of Nawab vs East India Company

The Murshidabad tour is a weekend tour from Kolkata, to the old capital of Bengal. We will relive the history of Murshidabad where Mir Jaffar betrayed the Nawab of Bengal and The East India Company gained control of Bengal and eventually all of India. We will visit the site of the famous Battle of Plassey, Katra Masjid, the house of Siraj-ud-daula the Nawab, Mir Jaffar the traitor and Jagat Seth the most famous money lender of Murshidabad, the Imambara and the magnificent Palace of a thousand doors.

Battle ground of Plassey

We begin the Murshidabad tour at the grounds where the great battle of Plassey was fought which changed the course of Indian history. The victory of East India Company in this battle over Siraj-ud-Daula the Nawab of Bengal, established the British rule in India. Robert Clive had bribed Mir Jafar who was an aspirant to the throne of Nawab of Bengal, and this betrayal ensured that the battle was over in a few hours with a decisive victory for East India Company.

Mir Jaffar's house

Nimak Haram Deori is the main gate leading to Mir Jafar, the traitor’s palace Jafargunj. It is a memorial of the darkest hour in the history of Bengal. Mir Jaffar’s betrayal was decisive in the colonization of Bengal and India.

House of Jagat Seth

This is the house of Jagat Seth, the most famous money lender of Bengal. He and his family were the leading bankers of their times and had considerable political clout. Jagat Seth had joined Mir Jaffar in the conspiracy to defeat Siraj-ud-Daula.

Katra Mosque

Katra Mosque was built by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan between the years 1723 and 1724. Katra Mosque was an important centre for Islamic learning. The mosque is also the final resting place of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan who lies buried in a tomb under the 14 flight of steps leading to the courtyard.

Imambara

Located on the banks of Bhagirathi river the Bara Imambara was built by Nawab Nazim Mansoon Ali Khan Feradun Jah in 1847 AD. It was built after the Imambara built by Siraj-ud-Doula was destroyed in a fire. This massive complex was built is a record time of 11 months..

Hazarduari

Hazarduari is a magnificent Palace with a thousand doors. While 900 doors are real, the rest are false doors built to confuse intruders. The construction style of the palace is an amalgam of Italian and Greek architectural styles and is a great example of Murshidabad’s rich cultural heritage.
