Orchha in 1 day
Temples frozen in time!
Orchha is a medieval city frozen in time. It impresses with stunning architecture and intricate carvings. The town has been designed with an architectural style that is a smooth blend of Mughal and Rajput styles. Orchha leaves a lasting impression with its 300 years of Royal heritage, breathtaking temples and Palaces, a picturesque location besides the Betwa and an aroma of custard apples in the air!
Raj Mahal
The Raj Mahal is a spectacular monument constructed by Madhukar Shah in the 17th century. The unique design is inspired by his deeply religious beliefs. It is characterized by bold and colourful murals which are around religious themes.
Jahangir Mahal
The Palace was constructed in the 17th century by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo to welcome his friend, the Mughal emperor Jahangir. The domes are built according to Timurid customs and the gates are large enough to allow entry of War elephants.
Rai Praveen Mahal
Rai Parveen was a famous musician and poetess who was also called the Nightingale of Orchha. Raja Indramani dedicated this Palace to his paramour. The Palace has three stories with a central hall being the highlight with impressive paintings and depictions of various moods of Pravin Rai.
Ramraja Temple
Ramraja temple is the soul of Orchha. The idol of Lord Ram was supposed to be installed in the magnificent Chaturbhuj temple. Legend has it that the idols refused to move after being installed here and so a temple was built around them!
Lakshminarayana Temple
Lakshminarayana Temple exemplifies a unique blend of temple and fort architecture. Built with lime mortar and bricks, the temple has cannon slots on its roof. Its well-preserved frescos portray an amalgamation of Mughal and Bundelkhandi art and the carvings on the inside depict the life of Lord Krishna. The murals stand out courtesy their vibrant colours.
Chaturbhuj Temple
Chaturbhuj temple is yet another impressive piece of architecture and was built to house the idols that are now inside the Ram Raja temple. Today, it houses the image of Radha-Krishna.
Cenotaphs
We will end the Orchha tour at 14 cenotaphs that serve as memorials of the Kings of Orchha. The Chattris are placed on a platform and supported by pillars.
