The Marathas were the dominant power in India between the 17th and 19th centuries. Our next destination is an interesting temple calledDagdu Sheth. Its a temple of Lord Ganesh and was built by a sweet meat maker. The temple played a crucial role o galvanize the Indians to revolt against the British. The Walk continues to Lal Mahal the Palace built by father of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Our next destination is Kasba Ganapathy the presiding deity of Pune. The walk ends at Laxmi market the popular bazaar of Pune,

Shaniwarwada

It was the seat of power of the Peshwas or Prime Ministers of the powerful Maratha Empire which was a dominant power in India between the 17th and 19th centuries. This Palace was built in 1730 Shaniwarwada is considered as the most haunted place in Pune! As per local legends, even today Shaniwarwada is dreaded for supernatural activities on the full-moon night!

Dagdu Sheth Temple

Dagdu Sheth temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh and arguably the most famous one in Pune. This temple was built in 1892 by a sweet maker who lost his son to the plague. The temple played a crucial role in inspiring Lokmanya Tilak to organise the annual Ganesh festival to unite Indians to fight for freedom from the British.

Bhausaheb Rangariwada

Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari was an Ayurvedic doctor by profession, a dyer of cloth by lineage, who dreamt of an independent India. Born in 1851. We visit his mansion built in 1883 to serve as a meeting place for revolutionaries. The Wada is also famous because Bhausaheb started the very first Ganeshutsav in 1892.

Lal Mahal

Lal Mahal is a magnificent reconstruction of the original Palace built in 1630 by Shahaji Bhosle, father of Shivaji Maharaj. In was in these grounds that the young Shivaji Maharaj spent his childhood. The Palace was the backdrop for many significant events in history including the famous encounter between Shivaji Maharaj and Shaista Khan. A collection of oil paintings depicting the life and times of Shivaji Maharaj, is a highlight of this Palace.

Kasba Ganapati

Kasba Ganapati was commissioned in 1636 by Jijabai, the mother of Shivaji Maharaj. The temple was an inspiration for freedom fighter Lokmaya Tilak. In 1893 he created the concept of Ganapati festival with the idea of uniting the diverse population of India to fight for freedom from the British. We will talk about the crucial role played by this temple in India’s Independence during the walk.
