Chennai City Tour is a full day tour to experience authentic Chennai with its rich cultural heritage. The highlights include a visit to Chennai’s most famous temple of Kapaleeswar, the magnificent San Thome Basilica with relics of St Thomas, Ramakrishna Mutt the monastic organization, a temple dedicated to Sai Baba the great mystic, Fort St George which played a crucial role in establishing British rule in India, a centre for Vivekananda who introduced Indian philosophy to the West, and the Marina Beach.

Ancient Mylapore

Mylapore an ancient residential neighborhood of Chennai and a cultural hot spot today. It history goes back to Roman times when it used to trade pepper and fine cloth with Rome for Gold! It was occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later fell into the hands of the British till India’s independence in 1947.

Demystifying customs, rituals & philosophy

At Kapaaleswar temple, a cultural evangelist will explain the origin, significance and scientific basis for the colorful rituals in progress. A visit to Ramakrishna Mutt is about harmony of religions, which is the gist of the teachings of the great Philosopher Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Vivekananda House is a enriching experience of how Swamy Vivekananda made the West and the World aware of Indian Philosophy.

British legacy of Chennai

The story of British India is told at Fort St George which was the first English fort in India. The museum brings alive the events of the colonial era. We will also visit St. Mary's, the oldest Anglican church East of Suez and also the oldest British building in India.

Renaissance Art

The altar piece of St Mary's church is a depiction of the Last Supper! It is unsigned but betrays obvious signs of the Raphaelite school. It is believed to be done by a pupil of Raphael with the master himself giving a touch.

Following foot steps of St Thomas

San Thome Basilica is the venue to learn about how apostle St Thomas came to Chennai 2000 years ago and introduced Christianity to this part of the world. His relics are on display at the Basilica.

Kapaaleswar Temple
We visit the magnificent Kapaleeshwar temple. Built in the 7th century this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in Dravidian style architecture it has a towering “Gopuram”. Guests can expect a mesmerizing experience of rituals and serenity inside the temple.
Ramakrishna Mutt
Chennai City Tour takes us next to a unique monastic organization called Ramakrishna Mutt, dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna the 19th century saint. Guests will get to see the universal temple, the shrine, a beautiful Mantapam, a multimedia museum and an enchanting library.
Sai Baba Temple
This is a fantastic institution dedicated to Sai Baba, a great mystic who attracted followers from both Hindu and Muslim communities. The temple is built with white marble and has a lamp which has been glowing continuously for over a century. Its a great place to learn about how Sai Baba helped unite people from various faiths and taught about love and brotherhood.
San Thome Basilica
We visit the famous San Thome Basilica, the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore. In the 10th century AD Christians from Persia, founded this Christian village of Santhome, and then they built a Church and tomb over the burial site of St.Thomas. Built in Neo gothic style, the present structure was built by the Portuguese explorers in the 16th century. The highlight of this Basilica are the relics of St Thomas himself.
Fort St George
The next leg of Chennai City Tour takes us to Fort Saint George, the first English Fortress built in 1644 by the East India Company. During this visit we will understand how the British came to dominate India , their rule and finally how India won its independence. We will visit St Mary’s Church, the oldest Anglican Church of India.
Vivekananda House
We will explore the memorial for Swami Vivekananda who was a great philosopher. His speeches at the World’s Parliament of Religions held in September 1893 made him famous as an orator by divine right and as a messenger of Indian wisdom to the western world. Note that it will be closed on Mondays.
Marina Beach
Marina Beach The last leg of this Chennai walk takes us to the famous Marina Beach, the second longest in the world. The view from the top is magnificent and makes for a perfect ending to this walking tour of Chennai. On Mondays the Light House will be closed and we will instead spend time on the Marina Beach.
