The highlights include the Kerala Folklore museum with a treasure trove of artifacts, a walk in the Jewish quarters with a visit to Paradesi Synagogue, the majestic Dutch Palace of Mattancherry, Chinese fishing nets and an exhilarating performance by Kathakali dancers who tell fascinating stories through their facial expressions and dance movements!.
Kathakali performance
Kathakali is a dance drama which originated in the 17th century. Dancers get a fantastic makeup and then tell a story, often from the epic Ramayana, through their dance. You will get to see the elaborate make up preparation as well as the main performance of the dancers.
Kerala Folklore Museum
Folklore Museum specializes in architecture and ethnography. It is a treasure trove of stone, wood and bronze sculptures, ancient terracotta, Stone Age objects, jewelry, paintings, oil lamps, musical instruments, tribal and folk art, wood works, utensils, masks and traditional art forms etc. The folklore theatre also features traditional art performances.
Jew town & Paradesi Synagogue
We walk to the famous Jew town and explore Paradesi Synagogue, the oldest Synagogue in commonwealth nations. It was built in 1568 by Sephardic Jews , who were exiled from Spain and Portugal and had settled in Kochi to become prosperous traders. The Synagogue will be closed on Fridays and Saturdays.
Mattancherry Palace
. Built by the Portuguese in 1557 and presented to Raja Veera Kerala Varma of Kochi, the Palace was renovated in 1663 by the Dutch. The palace with a Bhagavathi Temple in the central courtyard is built like the typical Kerala style mansion - the Nalukettu - the home of the aristocracy, nobility and upper classes, with four separate wings opening out to a central courtyard.
Santa Cruz Basilica
Santacriz Basilica was built by the Portuguese and elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558. The church has two lofty spires and a remarkably bright, white-washed exterior and a pastel-colored interior. The interiors of the church are mostly Gothic, with the main altar decorated by the famous Italian painter Fra Antonio Moscheni, S.J
