Belur & Halebid
Belur Halebidu is a magical journey to the 12th century when Hoysala empire was at its zenith. We will marvel at sculptures signed off by their creators at Belur Chennakesava temple which took a hundred years to build. In this one day trip from Bangalore, the patronage of art and architecture by the Hoysala Kings will be in full display Halebidu temple along with a statue of Nandi bull which took 86 years to build!
Impregnable Chitradurga
Chitradurga Fort tour takes you to a magnificent fort from the 17th century and is located 200 KMs north of Bangalore. It is a fascinating experience to explore this fort with its seven concentric fortification walls, 19 gateways, 38 posterior entrances, 35 secret pathways, four invisible passages, water tanks and 2000 watch towers! The fort is equipped with an amazing rain harvesting system and has a unique gun powder grinding machine. It is also the location where “Onake Obavva" the heroic lady displayed an act of valor.
Badami
Located in a ravine at the foot of red sandstone hills Badami looks mesmerizing surrounded by the Agastya lake. The cave temples are made of made of red sandstone and feature a hall with numerous pillars and a square shaped sanctum. Paintings cover the ceiling. An 18 armed lord Nataraja in 81 dancing poses is of interest.
Aihole
There are more than a hundred stone temples from 5th century onwards to see. Aihole used to be the capital of Chalukyas before Badami. It is most famous for a school of architecture where artisans used to learn the craft of temple building. Legend says it is at Aihole that Lord Parashurama washed his axe after killing all the Kshatrayas.
Pattadakal
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an epitome of the Visara style of architecture. It was the coronation iste for the Chalukyan Kings. The grandest of all temples here is that of Virupaksha, built in 8th Century by Queen Lokamahadevi in 745 to commemorate victory over the Pallavas of Kanchi. Pattadakal s a treasure trove of both Hindu and Jain temples.
Mysterious Talakadu
Talakadu used to be a flourishing town with more than 30 temples during ancient times. The legendary Queen’s curse buried the entire town with sand dunes. We will visit Vaidyanatheswara temple, one of the 5 temples excavated from the sands of Talakadu. We will explore this granite structure built in the 14th century by Chola Kings and dedicated to Lord Shiva. We will also visit Pataleshwara Shiva temple where the Lingam is supposed to change colors through the day from red, black and white!
