AMRABAD WILDLIFE TOUR
Safari in the Nizam's hunting ground, a dawn fort trek and a treehouse named after a tigress
South India's Second Largest Tiger Reserve — and Almost Nobody Has Heard of It
Amrabad Tiger Reserve covers over 2,600 square kilometres of the Nallamala hills in Telangana and is the second largest tiger reserve in India by area. It is also one of the least visited — which means genuine wilderness encounters without the crowds that follow tigers in more famous reserves. The forests here were once the private hunting grounds of the Nizams of Hyderabad, who built roads and rest houses through the reserve to access game that once roamed in extraordinary numbers. At the heart of the reserve stands the ruined fort of Prataparudra, the last king of the Kakatiya dynasty, whose fall to the Delhi Sultanate in 1323 AD ended one of the most powerful empires in South Indian history. And in the canopy above a percolation tank frequented by leopards, sloth bears and deer, a treehouse named Farha after the reigning tigress of the reserve offers an overnight stay unlike anything else available from Hyderabad. Our private Amrabad Tiger Reserve tour from Hyderabad brings all three of these extraordinary experiences together across two days with a naturalist guide who knows the reserve and its wildlife intimately. 5 Senses Tours is recognised by the Department of Tourism, a winner of the Outlook Responsible Tourism Award and the Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award.

What to expect
The Amrabad Tiger Reserve tour from Hyderabad begins with hotel pickup at 9 am in a private air conditioned vehicle. The drive to the reserve takes approximately three hours.
Check-in at the Munnanur Jungle Resort inside the reserve is at noon. After an orientation session at the Environment Centre — where your naturalist guide explains the ecology of the reserve, the wildlife you may encounter and the history of the Chenchu and Lambada communities who have lived in these forests for generations — the afternoon begins with the wildlife safari.
The Farahabad jungle safari is conducted in a jeep through the forest tracks of the reserve in the late afternoon when wildlife is most active. Amrabad has one of the most diverse mammal populations of any tiger reserve in India — tigers, leopards, wild dogs, Indian wolves, foxes, jungle cats, rusty-spotted cats, sloth bears, honey badgers, wild boar, chinkara, nilgai, blackbuck and the four-horned antelope all live within the reserve. Your naturalist guide reads the forest as you move through it — tracks in the dust, alarm calls from langurs, the particular stillness that precedes a large predator’s appearance. Wildlife spotting is never guaranteed — tigers are elusive by nature and the forest is vast — but the experience of moving through a functioning wild ecosystem with a guide who understands it is extraordinary in itself.
The overnight stay is in Farha, the treehouse named after tigress F6, the reigning female of the Amrabad territory. Nestled in the canopy of a large juvvi tree above a percolation tank, the treehouse overlooks a waterhole that is regularly visited by leopards, sloth bears, deer and wild boar — particularly after dark. Dinner is included on day one.
Day two begins before sunrise. The dawn trek through the reserve to the ruined fort of Prataparudra is the most unusual element of the Amrabad Tiger Reserve tour from Hyderabad — a walk through the forest in the early light, when the birds are at their most active and the nocturnal animals are returning from their night’s movement, leading to the ruins of a fort that once housed one of the most powerful kings in South India. The views from the fort walls over the reserve are extraordinary in the early morning light. Breakfast follows at the resort before checkout at 10 am.
Drive back to Hyderabad, arriving by approximately 3 pm.

Frequenly Asked Questions
Is tiger sighting guaranteed on the Amrabad wildlife tour?
Tiger sightings cannot be guaranteed on any wildlife safari anywhere in India. Tigers are elusive and the reserve covers over 2,600 square kilometres of dense forest. However Amrabad has a healthy tiger population and your naturalist guide's knowledge of the reserve and its wildlife significantly improves your chances. The diversity of other wildlife — leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, wolves and over 300 bird species — makes every safari extraordinary regardless of whether a tiger is seen.
What is the treehouse like and is it comfortable?
The Farha treehouse is nestled in the canopy of a large juvvi tree overlooking a percolation tank that is regularly visited by wildlife after dark. It is a comfortable forest stay rather than a luxury hotel — basic but well-maintained facilities in an extraordinary natural setting. The experience of waking in the forest canopy and watching wildlife at the waterhole below is unlike anything available in a conventional hotel.
What level of fitness is required for the dawn fort trek?
The trek to Prataparudra Fort is a moderate walk through forest terrain, suitable for anyone in reasonable health. The walk takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes each way and involves some uneven ground. Comfortable walking shoes and light clothing are recommended. The pre-dawn start means the temperature is cool and pleasant for walking.
What wildlife can I expect to see at Amrabad?
Amrabad is home to tigers, leopards, wild dogs, Indian wolves, sloth bears, honey badgers, chinkara, nilgai, blackbuck, four-horned antelope, wild boar and several species of deer. The reserve is also home to over 300 species of birds and the Chenchu and Lambada indigenous communities whose traditional knowledge of the forest is extraordinary. Wildlife sightings depend on season, time of day and the particular part of the reserve you are in.
What is the best time of year to visit Amrabad?
October to March is the best time for the Amrabad wildlife tour. The summer months from April to June are very hot and wildlife tends to be less visible during the day. The monsoon from July to September makes the forest lush and beautiful but some tracks may be inaccessible. Winter mornings offer the best conditions for both the safari and the dawn fort trek.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes, with some considerations. Children aged 8 and above are generally well suited to the wildlife safari and the treehouse stay. The dawn fort trek is moderate and suitable for older children in good health. Please mention the ages of children when booking so we can plan the pace and programme accordingly.
