Hemu the Last Hindu Emperor, a Lake Built for Love and a Night Inside a Thousand Year Old Fort

Most visitors to Delhi never realise that Rajasthan begins just two hours away. Alwar, the first royal city beyond the Aravalli hills, has a thousand years of history packed into its palaces, forts and cenotaphs — including the story of Hemu, the Hindu general who in 1556 came within a single battle of ending Mughal rule in India and becoming the last Hindu emperor of Delhi. The City Palace he served under rises above the town with its five extraordinary gates. Siliserh Lake, created by a Maharaja who fell in love with a woman from the village below and built a palace on the water to be near her, is one of the most romantic landscapes in Rajasthan. And the overnight stay at Dadhikar Fort, whose history stretches back a thousand years, gives you the experience of sleeping inside a living piece of Rajput history. The next morning brings Neemrana, the 15th century fort palace and its extraordinary step well — a feat of engineering built to harvest water in a landscape where rain cannot be relied upon. Our private Neemrana Fort Alwar tour from Delhi takes you through all of this across two extraordinary days. 5 Senses Tours is recognised by the Department of Tourism, a winner of the Outlook Responsible Tourism Award and the Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award.

What to expect

The Neemrana Fort Alwar tour from Delhi begins with hotel pickup at 8 am in a private air conditioned vehicle. The drive to Alwar takes approximately three and a half hours via the NH48 through the Aravalli hills, the landscape shifting gradually from the Delhi plains into the rocky Rajasthan terrain.

Day 1 — Alwar

The Alwar Fort, known as Bala Quila, is the first stop — a magnificent medieval fortification built in 1550 by Hasan Khan Mewati and perched at 1,000 feet above the surrounding countryside. The fort has 15 large towers, 51 small towers and 446 openings, and has passed through the hands of the Khanzadas, Mughals, Pathans and Jats across its history. Your guide explains the story of Hemu — the Hindu general who served the Sur dynasty and rose from selling saltpetre to commanding an army, who won 22 consecutive battles and was proclaimed Vikramaditya, the last Hindu emperor of India, after capturing Delhi in 1556 — only to lose everything at the Second Battle of Panipat weeks later when a stray arrow struck him in the eye and his army scattered.

The City Palace below the fort is one of the finest specimens of Rajput-Islamic architecture in Rajasthan, its five extraordinary gates — Laxman Pol, Suraj Pol, Chand Pol, Kishan Pol and Andheri Gate — leading through successive courtyards to an inner precinct surrounded by Krishna temples on every side.

Siliserh Lake is the afternoon destination, created in 1845 by Maharaja Vinay Singh who is said to have fallen in love with a local woman from the village below and built both the lake and a palace on its bank to be near her. The lake is one of the most beautiful in Rajasthan and the palace above it, which served as both royal residence and hunting lodge, commands extraordinary views across the water.

The Moosi Maharani Chhatri, built in 1815 in memory of King Bakhtawar Singh and his queen Moosi, is one of the most refined pieces of funerary architecture in Rajasthan — its ground floor in red sandstone, its upper storey and pavilion in white marble with carved domed arches and intricate floral tracery.

Overnight stay in Dadhikar Fort, a heritage property whose history goes back a thousand years.

Day 2 — Neemrana

The drive to Neemrana takes approximately 90 minutes through the Aravalli countryside. Neemrana Fort Palace, built in 1464 AD on a high hillock, takes its name from a valiant local chieftain named Nimola Meo who held it against overwhelming odds. The fort commands extraordinary views across the surrounding landscape and has been meticulously restored as a heritage hotel since the 1980s. Your guide explains the history of the fort and the Chahamana dynasty who built it.

The step well of Neemrana is the final stop on the Neemrana Fort Alwar tour from Delhi, an extraordinary feat of medieval water engineering. The Baori, as step wells are known in Rajasthan, descends multiple levels into the earth through carved stone steps, creating a microclimate cool enough to serve as a social gathering space in the scorching Rajasthan summer as well as a reliable water source year round.

Drive back to Delhi, arriving by approximately 6:30 pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Alwar from Delhi and how long does the drive take?

Alwar is approximately 160 kilometres from Delhi, a drive of around three and a half hours via the NH48 through the Aravalli hills. We depart at 8 am to arrive in Alwar by mid-morning with enough time to cover all four sites on day one before the overnight stay at Dadhikar Fort.

Where do we stay overnight and what is included?

The overnight stay is at Dadhikar Fort, a heritage property near Alwar whose history goes back a thousand years. One night on double occupancy with breakfast is included in the tour price. For single occupancy please select the single person pricing which includes a single occupancy room.

Who was Hemu and why is he significant?

Hemu was a Hindu general who served the Sur dynasty and rose to become the most powerful military commander in North India in the 1550s. He won 22 consecutive battles and in 1556 captured Delhi, proclaiming himself Vikramaditya — effectively the last Hindu emperor of India. He was defeated and killed at the Second Battle of Panipat when a stray arrow struck him in the eye, ending one of the most dramatic near-misses in Indian history. Your guide tells the full story at Alwar Fort.

Is Neemrana Fort the same as the famous heritage hotel?

Yes. Neemrana Fort Palace, built in 1464 AD, has been restored and operated as a heritage hotel since the 1980s. On our tour we visit the fort as a heritage site — its history, architecture and views — rather than staying there. The overnight stay is at Dadhikar Fort nearby. If you would prefer to stay at Neemrana Fort Palace itself please let us know when booking and we can arrange this at an additional cost.

What is the step well at Neemrana and why is it worth seeing?

The Baori or step well at Neemrana is a medieval water harvesting structure that descends multiple levels into the earth through carved stone steps. Built to provide reliable water supply in the water-scarce Aravalli landscape, step wells also functioned as social spaces — the cool temperatures at the lower levels made them gathering places during the scorching Rajasthan summer. The Neemrana step well is one of the finest examples of this extraordinary tradition in Rajasthan.

Can this tour be done as a day trip from Delhi without the overnight stay?

The distance and the number of sites make a comfortable day trip without an overnight stay very difficult — you would need to depart before 6 am and would not return until after 9 pm. The overnight stay at Dadhikar Fort is also one of the most memorable aspects of the tour and is strongly recommended. However if you specifically require a day trip version please contact us and we will design a shorter itinerary covering either Alwar or Neemrana only.
