Ancient Port of Arikamedu
Ancient Port
A half-day tour to Arikamedu explores one of South India’s most significant yet understated archaeological sites, identified through excavations and material analysis as an Indo-Roman trading port active from around the 2nd century BCE to the 2nd century CE. Findings such as Roman amphorae, Arretine ware, glass beads, and coins—studied using ceramic typology and stratigraphy—confirm long-distance maritime exchange across the Indian Ocean, a network also described in the 1st-century text Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. Walking along the Ariyankuppam river and through the remains of workshops and warehouses, the tour focuses on evidence rather than legend, showing how Arikamedu reshaped historical understanding of ancient India as an active participant in early globalization rather than a peripheral observer.

Pondicherry to Arikamedu
The drive south along the Ariyankuppam river is barely 20 minutes, but it crosses centuries. As modern Pondicherry fades, you’re moving toward a site that once sat on the global trade map between the 2nd century BCE and the 2nd century CE. Archaeological excavations by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in 1945 confirmed Arikamedu as an Indo-Roman trading port, backed by Roman amphorae, Arretine ware, beads, and coin finds—hard material evidence of Mediterranean trade networks described in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a 1st-century Greek maritime text.
Walk through Ruins
The first experience is silence broken by imagination. You explore low brick foundations, remnants of warehouses, bead-making workshops, and quay-like structures along the riverbank. This was not a city of palaces, but of commerce—artisans shaping semi-precious stones, merchants negotiating pepper, textiles, and gems. Scientific analysis of beads found here shows advanced drilling techniques, indicating skilled local craftsmanship rather than Roman manufacture, challenging older assumptions that Rome dominated production.
Guided Tour
The Arikamedu tour is fully guided and led by a guide who will bring alive the rich history.
Arinyakuppam
Standing by the river is essential. Geological studies suggest the river was once deeper and navigable by sea-going vessels, explaining Arikamedu’s strategic importance. This is where Roman ships likely anchored, goods transferred to smaller boats, and cultures exchanged ideas along with merchandise. It’s also where guides can layer in stories of Tamil Sangam literature, which references overseas traders known as Yavanas—a literary corroboration of the archaeological record.
