The Dynasty That Built the World's Most Powerful Navy — and Left Three World Heritage Temples Behind

In the year 1025 AD, Rajendra Chola I launched the most audacious naval campaign in Asian history. His fleet sailed from the Tamil Nadu coast across the Bay of Bengal, defeated the Srivijaya Empire in what is now Malaysia and Indonesia, and returned with so much plunder and such prestige that Rajendra built an entirely new capital city to celebrate — Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the City of the King Who Took the Ganges. He was the son of Raja Raja Chola, the king who had already built the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur, the greatest temple in South India, to mark his own conquests. Together father and son built three UNESCO World Heritage temples that stand today as the most extraordinary legacy of the most powerful maritime empire India ever produced. Our private Chola temples tour from Chennai takes you to all three across two days, with an expert cultural guide who brings the full story of the Chola dynasty, its architectural genius and its extraordinary reach across Asia to life. 5 Senses Tours is recognised by the Department of Tourism, a winner of the Outlook Responsible Tourism Award and the Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award.

What to expect

The Chola temples tour from Chennai begins with hotel pickup at 6:30 am in a private air conditioned vehicle. The drive south to Thanjavur covers 350 kilometres and takes approximately six hours.

Day 1 — Thanjavur

The first stop on arrival in Thanjavur is the Tanjore Palace, built during the Nayak period and later repaired by the Marathas. The palace complex houses the Royal Museum, an art gallery and the extraordinary Saraswati Mahal Library — one of the oldest libraries in Asia, its collection including rare palm leaf manuscripts, illustrated texts on medicine, astronomy and music, and a remarkable set of illustrated scrolls depicting scenes from Indian mythology. The Durbar Hall has walls painted with scenes of divine narrative in a style that combines Nayak and Maratha artistic traditions. Walk the queen’s courtyard and ask your guide about the underground passage that runs beneath the palace.

The Brihadeeswara Temple is the centrepiece of the Chola temples tour from Chennai and the greatest architectural achievement of the Chola dynasty. Built between 1003 and 1010 AD by Raja Raja Chola I — the Ponniyin Selvan of Kalki’s celebrated novel — it was the tallest building in India at the time of its completion, its 66 metre vimana tower visible from miles across the flat Kaveri delta. The temple celebrates its 1,000th birthday in 2010 and is still in active worship. The frescoes inside the circumambulatory passage date from the Chola period and depict scenes of Shiva in poses of extraordinary grace, their colours still vivid after ten centuries. Your guide explains the engineering of the tower, the iconographic programme of the sculptures, and the story of Raja Raja Chola — the king who unified South India, built a navy that would eventually reach Indonesia, and expressed his ambition in stone that has outlasted every empire that came after him.

Overnight stay in Thanjavur.

Day 2 — Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram

The Airavateswar Temple at Darasuram, built in the 12th century by Raja Raja Chola II, is the most refined and intimate of the three UNESCO Chola temples. The temple takes its name from Airavata, the white elephant of Lord Indra, who according to legend bathed in the sacred tank here and was cured of a curse. The chariot-shaped mandapa at the entrance is carved with such extraordinary delicacy that it appears to float rather than rest on the ground. The sculptures here are considered the most technically perfect of the entire Chola tradition.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram is the final and most evocative stop on the Chola temples tour from Chennai. Built in 1025 AD by Rajendra Chola I to commemorate his northern campaign that reached the Ganges, the temple was the heart of a capital city that served the Chola Empire for 250 years and then was gradually abandoned after the dynasty’s decline. Today the temple stands almost alone in the countryside, surrounded by the foundations of the palace and the city that once surrounded it. The giant Nandi sculpture in the courtyard is one of the largest in South India. The Lion figure beside the well where Rajendra poured the Ganges water brought from his conquests is one of the most powerful images in Chola art. Your guide connects the military achievement, the architectural ambition and the human story of a dynasty that shaped the history of an entire ocean.

Frequenty Asked Questions

How far is Thanjavur from Chennai and how long does the drive take?

Thanjavur is approximately 350 kilometres from Chennai. The drive takes around six hours in a private air conditioned vehicle via the well maintained NH83 highway. We depart at 6:30 am to arrive in Thanjavur by early afternoon with enough time to visit the Tanjore Palace and Brihadeeswara Temple on day one.

Which three temples are covered on the Chola temples tour?

The tour covers all three UNESCO World Heritage Chola temples — the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur, the Airavateswar Temple at Darasuram near Kumbakonam, and the Brihadeeswara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram. Together these three temples represent the greatest architectural legacy of the Chola dynasty.

Is overnight accommodation included in the Chola temples tour?

Yes. One night stay in Thanjavur on single occupancy with breakfast is included in the tour price. The hotel is centrally located in Thanjavur close to the Brihadeeswara Temple, allowing you to visit the temple in the early morning light before day two begins.

What is the best time of year to do the Chola temples tour from Chennai?

October to March is the ideal time. Tamil Nadu summers from April to June are very hot and walking around the temple exteriors in midday heat is tiring. The northeast monsoon from October to December brings occasional rain but the temples are fully accessible year round. Early morning visits to the Brihadeeswara Temple offer the best light for the sculptures.

Do I need to know anything about the Chola dynasty before the tour?

No prior knowledge is needed. Our expert cultural guide covers the full story of the Chola dynasty from its origins to its peak under Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola, explaining the significance of each temple, its sculptures and its place in Indian history as you go. If you have read or watched Ponniyin Selvan, this tour brings that world directly to life.

Are the Chola temples still active places of worship?

Yes. All three temples are still in active worship and receive Hindu pilgrims daily alongside heritage visitors. The Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur in particular conducts daily rituals and festivals. Visitors are welcome but modest dress is required — shoulders and knees covered — and shoes must be removed before entering the temple precincts.
