West Coast Trail

This journey explores Mangalore, Kateel, Udupi, Murudeshwar, Gokarna, Maravanthe, and Yana, offering a rich blend of sacred sites and coastal landscapes. In Mangalore, you visit Kudroli Gokarnath and Mangaladevi temples, the painted interiors of St Aloysius Chapel, and the open shoreline of Ullal Beach. Kateel’s Durga Parameshwari Temple appears to rise from the Nandini River and is closely linked to the Yakshagana dance tradition, while Udupi reveals the famed Krishna Temple and its historic viewing window, alongside sea views from Kapu lighthouse. At Maravanthe, the Arabian Sea and Souparnika River run side by side, leading north to Murudeshwar, where a monumental Shiva statue and shore temple dominate the coast. The tour continues to Gokarna, known for its temple town atmosphere and calm beaches, and concludes at Yana, a rainforest village famed for its dramatic black limestone rock formations and cave shrine steeped in legend.

Day 1- Mangalore

The day introduces you to Mangalore’s layered spiritual and cultural identity through visits to Kudroli Gokarnath and Mangaladevi temples, where mythology, reformist history, and ritual art come together. You then experience the striking frescoes of St Aloysius Chapel, a rare example of European sacred art in India, before unwinding at Ullal Beach, where the Arabian Sea sets the tone for the coastal journey ahead.

Day 2- Kateel & Udupi

You travel through riverine and temple landscapes, beginning at Kateel’s Durga Parameshwari Temple, dramatically set on the Nandini River and closely linked to the Yakshagana performance tradition. The day continues to Udupi, home to the revered Krishna Temple and its unique viewing window, with time along the coast at Kapu lighthouse offering expansive views of the sea.

Day 3- Murudheshwar

A scenic coastal drive brings you to Maravanthe, where the Arabian Sea and the Souparnika River run parallel on either side of the road, creating one of India’s most unusual natural settings. By afternoon, you reach Murudeshwar, where a towering Shiva statue and grand seaside temple dominate the shoreline, blending devotion with dramatic ocean vistas.

Day 4- Gokarna

The journey slows in Gokarna, a temple town framed by rivers, hills, and beaches, known for its spiritual atmosphere and unspoiled coastline. The day offers a balance of sacred spaces and relaxed beach time, reflecting Gokarna’s long-standing role as both a pilgrimage centre and a retreat by the sea.

Day 5- Yana

The final day leads into the forested Western Ghats to Yana, a small forest village known for its dramatic black limestone rock formations formed through millions of years of karst erosion. One of these formations contains a natural cave shrine with a self-formed Shiva linga, making Yana both a geological rarity and an active place of worship, often mentioned in local Shaiva legends and regional folklore. Surrounded by streams and dense rainforest in one of the wettest zones of Karnataka, Yana offers a powerful sense of isolation where nature, myth, and devotion coexist. Surrounded by streams and dense greenery, the visit blends geology, mythology, and nature before a scenic drive back to Mangalore, bringing the coastal and cultural circuit to a close.
