Art, History, and Literature Immersion

The Government Museum in Egmore is one of the most extraordinary museums in Asia and one of the most undervisited in India. Its bronze gallery houses what is widely considered the finest collection of South Indian bronze sculptures in the world, Chola Nataraja figures and depictions of Shiva and Parvati from the 7th to the 18th century, bronzes of such technical perfection that museums in Paris and New York have spent decades trying to acquire comparable pieces. A short walk away, the Connemara Library sits in an Indo-Saracenic building of extraordinary beauty, its main reading room a cathedral of carved wood and sculpted arches, its shelves holding over 600,000 books including a copy of every publication ever printed in India. Our private Egmore Museum tour Chennai takes you through both in four hours, with a guide who brings the art history, the archaeology and the architecture to life in ways that a self-guided visit never can. 5 Senses Tours is recognised by the Department of Tourism, a winner of the Outlook Responsible Tourism Award and the Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award.

What to expect

The Egmore Museum tour Chennai begins with hotel pickup at 9 am in a private air conditioned vehicle.

The Bronze Gallery is the first and most important stop, the section that draws scholars and art lovers from across the world to this museum. The collection spans from the 7th to the 18th century and covers the great dynasties of South Indian history — Chola, Pallava, Pandya and Vijayanagara. The Nataraja figures here, depicting Shiva as the cosmic dancer within a ring of fire, are among the most celebrated works of art ever produced in India. The technical achievement of these bronzes is extraordinary — lost wax casting of such precision that the finest pieces capture fabric, jewellery and facial expression in metal with a delicacy that has never been surpassed. Your guide explains the iconography behind each figure, what the gestures mean, why the Chola bronzes in particular represent the absolute peak of this tradition, and why these sculptures belong in the same conversation as the greatest works of art produced anywhere in the ancient world.

The Archaeological Gallery follows, its exhibits spanning the full arc of South Indian dynastic history through Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sculptures. The Amaravati Gallery within it is one of the most significant collections of early Buddhist art in Asia — the Amaravati Marbles are limestone carvings from a great Buddhist stupa that stood on the Krishna river in the 2nd century BC and was dismantled over the centuries. The Indus Valley Civilization Gallery contains artefacts from one of the oldest urban civilisations on Earth, and the Epigraphy section holds ancient inscriptions on stone and copper plates that are primary sources for understanding the languages and administrative history of the region.

The National Art Gallery displays Tanjore paintings with their characteristic rich colours and gold leaf work, Rajput and Mughal miniatures, and works by Raja Ravi Varma, the 19th century painter who more than any other single artist shaped how educated Indians visualise their own mythology.

The Anthropology Gallery takes you further back than any of the others, through the Stone Age, Copper Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age through tools, pottery and artefacts that trace the full sweep of human presence in South India from the Palaeolithic period onwards.

The Connemara Library is the final stop on the Egmore Museum tour Chennai and a complete change of atmosphere — a working library of extraordinary beauty rather than a museum, its Indo-Saracenic building blending Gothic-Byzantine, Rajput Mughal and Southern Hindu Deccani architectural traditions into a single breathtaking whole. The main reading room with its rich wooden ceiling supported by ornate pillars and arches is one of the finest interior spaces in Chennai. As one of only four National Depository Libraries in India, Connemara receives a copy of every publication printed in the country. As a UN Depository Library, it also holds publications from the United Nations. The wooden chairs have animal carvings on their armrests. The stained glass panels filter the light in colours that shift through the morning. It is a place that rewards slow looking.
