HAMPI BADAMI TOUR FROM HYDERABAD
Hampi Badami Tour from Hyderabad | Hampi, Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal | 5 Senses Tours
From the City That Rivalled Rome to the Caves Where Indian Temple Architecture Was Born
Three dynasties, four UNESCO-level heritage sites and four thousand years of architectural history make the Hampi Badami tour from Hyderabad the most comprehensive ancient heritage circuit available in South India. Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, which at its peak in the early 16th century was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world — larger than Rome, its bazaars described by Portuguese traders as the most magnificent they had ever seen. Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal were the successive capitals of the Chalukya dynasty which ruled between the 6th and 8th centuries and gave the world some of the earliest and most sophisticated experiments in Hindu and Jain stone temple architecture. Aihole is where the craftsmen of the Chalukya court effectively invented the grammar of the stone temple. Pattadakal is where the greatest expression of their achievement was commissioned by a queen to celebrate her husband's military victory. Riding a coracle on the Tungabhadra, walking through Anegundi where the Ramayana has its roots, and sleeping across four nights inside the landscapes of these extraordinary civilisations makes this one of the most complete heritage experiences available from Hyderabad. Our private Hampi Badami tour from Hyderabad covers every extraordinary site with expert cultural guides who bring each dynasty and each stone to life. 5 Senses Tours is recognised by the Department of Tourism, a winner of the Outlook Responsible Tourism Award and the Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award.

What to expect
The Hampi Badami tour from Hyderabad begins with hotel pickup at 8 am in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The drive from Hyderabad to Hampi takes approximately six to seven hours through the Karnataka-Telangana countryside, arriving at the hotel in Hampi or Hospet by late afternoon.
Day 2 — The Royal City of Hampi
The morning begins at Malyavantha Hill, from whose summit the full scale of the Vijayanagara ruins becomes visible — 26 square kilometres of temples, palaces, market streets and hydraulic systems spread across a landscape of extraordinary boulders. The Royal Enclosure is the seat of power of the Vijayanagara kingdom, its durbar halls, ceremonial platforms, underground chambers, tanks and temples speaking directly to the administrative and ceremonial life of one of the greatest empires in Indian history. The Mahanavami Dibba, the ceremonial platform used for the Dussehra festival, is covered in carvings of royal processions, soldiers, horses, elephants and foreign visitors that provide the most vivid picture of Vijayanagara court life. The Hazara Rama Temple, the private royal chapel, has exterior wall carvings that tell the entire story of the Ramayana in sequential narrative panels.
The Ugra Narasimha, a 22-foot monolithic image of Vishnu in his man-lion avatar carved during the reign of Krishnadevaraya, and the Badavi Linga, a 12-foot Shiva linga carved from black stone through which a canal passes continuously, are the two most powerful individual images in Hampi. The Queen’s Bath and the Elephant Stables — eleven domed chambers built to house the royal war elephants — give a vivid sense of the scale and ambition of the Vijayanagara court.
Day 3 — The Temples and the River
The morning begins at Hemakuta Hill with its cluster of early Vijayanagara temples and the finest views over the town. The Virupaksha Temple, oldest at Hampi and predating the empire itself, rises 165 feet in eleven storeys above the town and is still in active daily worship.
The Vittala Temple complex is the architectural masterpiece of the Hampi Badami tour from Hyderabad. The stone chariot — built of rough quartz with figures of soldiers, hunters, Portuguese and Arab visitors carved on its surface — is the most photographed image of Hampi. The musical pillars of the main hall, each producing a different note, represent one of the most extraordinary feats of acoustic engineering in ancient Indian architecture.
The afternoon crosses to Anegundi, the village on the northern bank associated in Hindu tradition with the Kishkindha of the Ramayana — the monkey kingdom where Rama met Hanuman. A coracle ride on the Tungabhadra and a walk through the village and its banana plantations complete day three.
Day 4 — The Chalukya Circuit
Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami form the complete Chalukya circuit. Aihole, with over 125 temples from the 5th century onwards, was the open-air laboratory where Chalukya craftsmen invented and refined the grammar of the Indian stone temple across generations of continuous experimentation. Pattadakal, the UNESCO World Heritage coronation site, holds the Virupaksha Temple built in 745 AD by Queen Lokamahadevi to commemorate her husband’s victory over the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram — the grandest building of the Chalukya tradition and a direct architectural response to the temples the Pallavas were building at Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram. Badami, in its ravine above the Agastya lake, has four cave temples carved from red sandstone cliffs with painted ceilings, columned halls and the celebrated 18-armed Nataraja depicted in 81 different dance poses.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Hampi from Hyderabad and how long does the drive take?
Hampi is approximately 370 kilometres from Hyderabad, a drive of around six to seven hours through the Telangana-Karnataka countryside. We depart at 8 am on day one and arrive at the hotel in Hampi or Hospet by late afternoon. The return drive from Badami to Hyderabad on day five takes approximately six hours arriving by 5 pm.
Why is the Hyderabad tour 5 days while the Bangalore tour is 4 days?
The extra day accounts for the longer drive from Hyderabad. The Bangalore version departs at 7 am and arrives in Hampi by early afternoon, allowing a partial day at the ruins. The Hyderabad version arrives by late afternoon and uses day two as the first full day at Hampi, requiring an additional travel day at each end. The time spent at every heritage site is identical across both tours.
What accommodation is included and where do we stay?
Three nights in Hampi or Hospet on double occupancy with breakfast and one night in Badami on double occupancy with breakfast are included. Most stays are in Hospet, 13 kilometres from Hampi, which has a good range of comfortable hotels. Single occupancy is available at additional cost as shown in the pricing chart.
What is the coracle ride and is it safe?
A coracle is a traditional round basket boat made from bamboo and buffalo hide that has been used on the Tungabhadra river for centuries. The crossing from Hampi to the ancient village of Anegundi on the northern bank is made by coracle as there is no road bridge at this point. The ride takes about 10 minutes on calm water and is entirely safe. It is one of the most memorable moments of the entire tour.
What makes Pattadakal the most important stop on the Chalukya circuit?
Pattadakal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the coronation city of the Chalukya kings — the place chosen to display the dynasty's full architectural ambition. The Virupaksha Temple, built in 745 AD by Queen Lokamahadevi to celebrate her husband's military victory over the Pallavas, is the grandest Chalukya building in existence. Its sculptural programme directly references the Pallava temples at Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram, showing how closely the two royal courts watched and responded to each other's achievements.
Can this tour be done from Hyderabad in fewer days?
Five days is the minimum from Hyderabad that does justice to all four sites given the distance involved. If you have fewer days available we offer tours focused on Hampi alone departing from Hyderabad, which can be done in three days including travel. Please contact us for a customised itinerary based on your available time.
