Murshidabad Tour “The Betrayal”
Murshidabad Tour
A private 2-day journey from Kolkata into the most consequential betrayal in Indian history — the weekend that decided the fate of a nation
Nawab vs East India Company
In June 1757, on a mango grove outside a small Bengal town called Plassey, a battle lasted barely three hours and changed the course of history for 300 years. The Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daula, was betrayed by his own general Mir Jaffar, bribed by Robert Clive of the East India Company. The British victory that followed did not just conquer Bengal; it set in motion the colonisation of the entire Indian subcontinent. Our private Murshidabad tour from Kolkata takes you to the exact places where this story unfolded: the battlefield, the traitor's palace, the banker who funded the conspiracy, the mosque where the last independent Nawab is buried, and the magnificent Palace of a Thousand Doors built by the dynasty that replaced him.

What to expect
The Murshidabad tour from Kolkata begins with a 7am hotel pick-up in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The four-hour drive north through the Bengali countryside brings you to Plassey by midday, the mango grove where in 1757 the East India Company defeated Siraj-ud-Daula in a battle that was decided not by military strength but by treachery. Your guide tells the full story here, on the ground where it happened: the bribes, the conspiracy, the three hours that ended Bengal’s independence.
From Plassey the tour moves into Murshidabad itself. The house of Mir Jaffar, Nimak Haram Deori, literally the Gate of the Dishonourable, is a memorial to the darkest chapter in Bengal’s history. Your guide explains who Mir Jaffar was, what he was promised, and what he received. Then the house of Jagat Seth, the most powerful banker of his era, who threw his financial weight behind the conspiracy and helped seal Siraj-ud-Daula’s fate. Then Siraj-ud-Daula’s own cemetery, Khushbagh, where the last independent Nawab of Bengal is buried in a garden on the banks of the Bhagirathi river.
The second day covers the cultural heart of Murshidabad. Katra Mosque, built between 1723 and 1724 by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, is one of the oldest mosques in Bengal and the founder’s own burial place. He lies beneath the fourteen steps leading to the courtyard, in a gesture of deliberate humility. The Nizamat Imambara on the banks of the Bhagirathi was built in 1847 in just eleven months to replace the one Siraj-ud-Daula had built, which was destroyed in a fire. And finally Hazarduari, the Palace of a Thousand Doors, 900 real and 100 false, built to confuse intruders, an amalgam of Italian and Greek architecture that stands as the most magnificent monument to the dynasty the British allowed to remain as figureheads after the conquest.
This private Murshidabad tour from Kolkata is fully inclusive. Imambara
Located on the banks of Bhagirathi river the Bara Imambara was built by Nawab Nazim Mansoon Ali Khan Feradun Jah in 1847 AD. It was built after the Imambara built by Siraj-ud-Doula was destroyed in a fire. This massive complex was built is a record time of 11 months..
