White Mughals tour of Romance & Betrayal
WHITE MUGHALS STORY
A private half day tour through the monuments and lanes of 18th century Hyderabad, following the extraordinary true story of the British Resident who fell in love, converted to Islam and became a double agent against his own masters
Intruiging story of love & betrayal
In 1797, Colonel James Achilles Kirkpatrick arrived in Hyderabad as the British Resident to the court of the Nizams, tasked with subjugating the kingdom and strengthening the authority of the East India Company. Three years later he had married a Hyderabadi noblewoman named Khair un Nissa in a Muslim ceremony, converted to Islam, adopted the dress and customs of the Mughal court, and quietly switched his loyalty from the Company to the Nizams, becoming a double agent working against the very empire he had come to represent. William Dalrymple's book White Mughals tells this story in full. Our private White Mughals tour Hyderabad takes you to the actual places where it unfolded — the magnificent British Residency he built, the replica mansion he constructed so his purdah observing wife could see his home, the Rang Mahal palace where their daughter was born, and the historic gates, cemetery and stepwell that formed the world the two of them inhabited together.

What to expect
The White Mughals tour Hyderabad begins with hotel pickup at 9 am in a private air conditioned vehicle.
The first stop is Bank Street, the financial heart of 18th century Hyderabad, where the tour begins with your guide setting the scene — the Hyderabad that Kirkpatrick arrived in, the extraordinary wealth of the Nizams, and the complex political game the East India Company was playing across the Deccan.
The British Residency is the centrepiece of the White Mughals tour Hyderabad. This imposing mansion was built after the Nizams and the British signed a treaty in 1798, and it served as both the official residence and administrative headquarters of the British Resident. The Durbar Hall is the highlight, its Burma teak flooring, Belgian mirrors and French chandeliers a statement of British imperial confidence that sits oddly in a city whose culture Kirkpatrick was simultaneously embracing. The surrounding Residency Bazaar grew into the financial centre of Hyderabad through the 19th century. After the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny the residency was fortified with high walls and bastions. Today it is Osmania Women’s College.
The replica mansion is one of the most romantic details of the entire story. Khair un Nissa, as a Muslim noblewoman in purdah, was forbidden from visiting her husband’s official residence. Kirkpatrick’s solution was to build her an exact smaller replica of the British Residency within the compound so she could experience the building he was so proud of without breaking the rules of her faith.
Rang Mahal, the Palace of Colours, was the private palace Kirkpatrick built for his Begum within the residency compound. It was here that Khair un Nissa gave birth to their daughter Sahib Begum.
The tour continues through the three historic gates — Empress, Robert and Lansdowne — that once controlled access to the residency quarter, past a British cemetery where Company officials who never made it home lie buried, a stepwell that supplied the residency with water, and ends at the memorial to a resident’s dog, a small and oddly moving footnote to the whole extraordinary story.
Hotel drop by 1:30 pm.

Romance
The famous story of James Kirkpatrick and Khair-un-Nissa was not just about romance but also about culture, politics and history of the time. The White Mughals story begins in 1797 when Col James Kirkpatrick becomes the British Resident to the Kingdom of Hyderabad. He was an ambitious man and was looking to make a mark by subjugating Hyderabad and strengthening the authority of East India Company. However, things took a different turn when he fell in love with Khair un-Nissa a Hyderabadi noblewoman. In 1800, Kirkpatrick married her as per Muslim law, converted to Islam and adopted the lifestyle of Mughals. Eventually he became a double agent working for Hyderabad against the interests of the Company!
British Residency
The British Residency is an imposing building and architectural marvel and was the backdrop for the White Mughals story. It was built after the Nizams and the British signed a treaty in 1798 to allow the British to settle down in Hyderabad. The mansion was a symbol of British authority in the deccan region. The Durbar Hall is the highlight of the British Residency. It looks regal with Burma Teakwood flooring and Belgian mirrors and French chandeliers.
Residency Bazaar
The surrounding area came to be known as Residency Bazaar and emerged as the financial center of Hyderabad in the mid-nineteenth century. After the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny against the British East India Company, the British Residency was fortified with high walls and bastions. The mansion was converted into Osmania Women’s College in 1947 after India gained her independence.
A replica
The reason behind building a replica of the British Residency is very romantic! Khair un-Nissa, being a Muslim lady, was in purdah and hence was not allowed to see her husband’s mansion. Therefore James went ahead and built a smaller replica of his mansion for his wife to enjoy!
Historic Gates
White Mughals tour includes a walk past arches at Empress, Robert and Lansdowne Gates, 3 historic gates and continues with the intriguing story set in the 18th century.
Rang Mahal
James also built a lavish palace for his Begum within the residency. Rang Mahal or Palace of colours was where Khair un-Nissa gave birth to their daughter Sahib Begum.
Landmarks
The White Mughals story of this forbidden cross-cultural love continues at a cemetery and a stepwell and ends at a resident’s dog memorial.
