DIAMOND TRIANGLE OF ODISHA

Three Buddhist universities from the 1st century CE — and almost nobody visits them

Private car 9 Hours Guided tour

Contemporary to Nalanda, Chronicled by Hiuen Tsang, and Almost Completely Unknown to the World

When the Chinese monk Hiuen Tsang travelled through India in the 7th century recording everything he encountered, he wrote about three Buddhist centres in the hills above the Mahanadi river valley — Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitagiri — that were functioning universities with resident monks, extensive libraries, grand stupas and monasteries of extraordinary scale. These three sites, which together form what is now known as the Diamond Triangle of Odisha, were active from the 1st century CE to the 13th century CE, making them contemporary with Nalanda and Taxila at the height of Buddhist civilisation in Asia. Lalitagiri is the oldest and holiest of the three — within its ancient stupas, archaeologists have found what are believed to be bone relics of the Buddha himself, making this one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in India. Yet compared to Nalanda or Bodh Gaya, the Diamond Triangle of Odisha is almost completely unknown to visitors from outside the region, its hilltop monasteries and carved stupas standing in remarkable solitude in the Odisha countryside. Our private Diamond Triangle of Odisha tour takes you to all three sites in a single extraordinary day with an expert guide who brings the full history of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism in Odisha to life. 5 Senses Tours is recognised by the Department of Tourism, a winner of the Outlook Responsible Tourism Award and the Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award.

What to expect

The Diamond Triangle of Odisha tour begins with hotel pickup at 8 am in a private air-conditioned vehicle from Bhubaneswar. The three sites are located approximately 90 to 110 kilometres from Bhubaneswar in the Jajpur and Cuttack districts.

Ratnagiri, the Hill of Jewels, is the first destination and the most extensively excavated of the three sites. Set on a serene hilltop, Ratnagiri was a grand centre of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist learning from the 5th century CE to the 13th century, and the remains of its monasteries, stupas and sculpture speak directly to the extraordinary cultural and intellectual life that was sustained here for over 800 years. The carved doorways of the monasteries are among the most refined examples of Buddhist decorative carving in eastern India, their intricate scrollwork and figural panels comparable in quality to the best work at Nalanda. Hundreds of votive stupas of varying sizes are scattered across the hilltop. The Buddha and Bodhisattva sculptures discovered here, now displayed in the on-site museum, span eight centuries of artistic development and include pieces of exceptional beauty and sophistication. Your guide explains the Vajrayana tradition that flourished here, its relationship to Tibetan Buddhism and why these hilltop monasteries were so much less well known than their western and southern counterparts despite their equal importance.

Udayagiri, the Sunrise Hill, is the largest of the three sites of the Diamond Triangle of Odisha and the most dramatically situated — a sprawling complex of monastic remains spread across a landscape of picturesque hills that gives the site a sense of space and grandeur that the more compact Ratnagiri does not have. Two major monasteries, stupas of impressive size and rock-cut sculptures are the main attractions. The scale of the ruins and the quality of the carved details in the surviving stonework give a clear sense of how significant and how wealthy this institution once was. The surrounding landscape of the Odisha hills, visible from the monastery platforms in every direction, is one of the most beautiful settings of any Buddhist site in India.

Lalitagiri is the oldest and most sacred site of the Diamond Triangle of Odisha, with Buddhist remains dating from the post-Mauryan period — from the 1st century CE — making it one of the oldest continuously occupied Buddhist sites in Odisha. The discovery of relic caskets within the main mahastupa containing what are believed to be bone fragments of the Buddha makes Lalitagiri a place of profound spiritual significance. The mahastupa itself, partly excavated and partly restored, stands at the highest point of the site with views across the surrounding countryside. The site museum contains the relic caskets and several extraordinary sculptures recovered from the excavations. Your guide explains the significance of Buddha relics in Buddhist practice, the relic cult that drove the construction of stupas across Asia, and why Lalitagiri’s relics make it one of the most important sacred sites in India that most Buddhist pilgrims from outside Odisha have never heard of.

Does Diamond Triangle of Odisha sound compelling?

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Diamond Triangle of Odisha and how far is it from Bhubaneswar?

The three sites — Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitagiri — are located in the Jajpur and Cuttack districts of Odisha, approximately 90 to 110 kilometres from Bhubaneswar. The drive takes around two hours. We depart at 8 am to reach the first site when it opens and cover all three comfortably before the 5 pm return.

Why is Lalitagiri considered the holiest site of the three?

Lalitagiri is the oldest Buddhist site of the three, with remains dating from the 1st century CE. Within its mahastupa, archaeologists discovered relic caskets containing what are believed to be bone fragments of the Buddha himself. In Buddhist tradition, the physical relics of the Buddha are objects of the deepest veneration — the reason stupas were built across Asia was specifically to house and honour such relics. Lalitagiri's relics make it one of the most spiritually significant Buddhist sites in India.

Who was Hiuen Tsang and why is his account significant?

Hiuen Tsang was a Chinese Buddhist monk who travelled through India between 629 and 645 CE, recording everything he encountered in meticulous detail. His accounts are among the most important historical sources for understanding Buddhist India in the 7th century. His description of the three sites of what is now the Diamond Triangle of Odisha confirms their status as major Buddhist learning centres during the period when Buddhism was at its height in India.

Are the sites suitable for Buddhist pilgrims as well as heritage visitors?

Yes. The Diamond Triangle of Odisha is significant for both heritage visitors and Buddhist pilgrims from around the world, particularly from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, Korea and Myanmar where Theravada and Mahayana traditions are strong. The relic site at Lalitagiri is an active place of pilgrimage. Your guide is experienced in accompanying both heritage-focused visitors and those with a devotional interest in the sites.

Can the Diamond Triangle tour be combined with the Konark Sun Temple tour?

The two tours cover different parts of Odisha and combining them in a single day would not do justice to either. We recommend the Diamond Triangle tour on day one and the Konark Sun Temple tour on day two for visitors spending two days in Bhubaneswar, giving you the full breadth of Odisha's extraordinary heritage across Buddhist, Hindu and prehistoric art traditions.

What is the difference between the three sites?

Ratnagiri is the most extensively excavated and has the finest sculpture collection in its on-site museum. Udayagiri is the largest site with the most dramatic landscape setting. Lalitagiri is the oldest and most sacred, with the Buddha relic stupas. Together they span the full 1,200-year arc of Buddhist presence in Odisha and each rewards a different kind of attention.
