World's longest temple corridor

Rameshwaram is one of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism and one of the most spiritually charged places in India. The Ramanathaswamy temple, built around a lingam that Lord Rama himself is said to have consecrated before crossing to Lanka, has the longest temple corridor in the world, over a thousand carved pillars stretching 640 feet from north to south, built in the 18th century by a local king who spent a lifetime completing what others had begun. The island of Rameshwaram is also where the Ram Sethu chain of shoals begins its journey towards Sri Lanka, and where the ghost town of Dhanushkodi sits at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, a once thriving settlement erased overnight by a cyclone in 1964. Our private Rameshwaram tour from Madurai takes you through all of it in a single extraordinary day.

What to expect

The Rameshwaram tour from Madurai begins with hotel pickup at 7 am in a private air conditioned vehicle. The three hour drive southeast brings you to the island of Rameshwaram, connected to the mainland by the Pamban Bridge, one of India’s most dramatic railway crossings.

The first stop is Agni Teertha, the sacred tank on the shore of the Bay of Bengal where Lady Sita is said to have walked through fire to prove her purity. It is the first of 22 theerthams — holy water bodies — inside the Ramanathaswamy temple complex, each representing one of the 22 arrows in Rama’s quiver. Devotees bathe in all 22 tanks as an act of spiritual cleansing. Your guide explains the ritual significance of each one and the stories associated with them.

The Ramanathaswamy temple follows, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India. As per legend, Lord Rama visited this spot to pray to Lord Shiva to atone for sins committed during the war against Ravana — and the two lingams worshipped here are extraordinary: one made from sand by Lady Sita herself, the other brought from Mount Kailash by Hanuman. The temple’s third corridor is the world’s longest temple corridor, with more than a thousand carved pillars measuring 640 feet in length and nearly 7 metres in height, built in the late 18th century. Walking its length is one of the most remarkable experiences in South Indian temple culture.

Kothandaramaswamy temple is next, a thousand year old shrine on a small island surrounded by the Bay of Bengal and the Gulf of Mannar. This is where Vibhishana, the younger brother of Ravana, surrendered to Lord Rama and was crowned king of Lanka in the Ramayana story. The setting alone, a temple rising from the sea at the edge of India, is extraordinary.

The Ram Sethu viewpoint allows you to see the area of shallow water under which the legendary bridge is said to lie. The bridge itself is submerged and cannot be seen directly, but your guide explains the geological and mythological story of the chain of shoals that stretches towards Sri Lanka — and connects this sight to the broader Ram Setu debate.

Dhanushkodi is the final and most haunting stop on the Rameshwaram tour from Madurai. This was once a thriving town of 20,000 people with a railway station, a church, a post office, and a port. On the night of 22 December 1964, a cyclone of extraordinary force struck the tip of the island and erased it within hours. Today only ruins remain, surrounded by one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in India, at the exact point where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean. Your guide tells the story of the town and the night it disappeared.

The Panchamukhi Hanuman temple is the last stop, where a piece of the floating stone said to have been used to build Ram Sethu is kept — a porous volcanic rock that does indeed float on water.

Agni Teertha

Agni Teertha a large tank of Ramayana fame and the first destination in the Rameshwaram tour. It is here lady Sita asked Lord Lakshman to light a fire and sat inside it to prove her purity. Agni Theertham holds a significant place among devotees as those who visit here cab offer their prayers and atone for their sins by bathing in its holy waters. It is also visited by childless couples. A holy dip in this theertham along with prayers to Lord Shiva is expected to bless them with children. There are 22 Theerthams or holy water bodies, inside the temple where devotees bathe to atone for their sins. Each of these water bodies represent the 22 arrows in Rama’s quiver. Each of the water bodies has a special significance for devotees.

Ramanathaswamy Temple

. As per legend Lord Ram visited here to pray to Lord Shiva to atone for sins committed during the great war of Ramayana. The temple dates back to the 12th century and its long corridor is adorned with aesthetically carved pillars. We will pay our respects to the main deity who is worshipped here in the form of 2 lingams. One lingam is made of sand and was made by Lady Sita while the other was brought from mount Kailash by Hanuman.

World's longest corridor

After visiting the deities in the temple in the Rameshwaram tour, we will walk to the longest temple corridor in the world. The third corridor of this temple has more than a thousand pillars and is a magnificent sight. It was built in the late eighteenth century by Muthuramalinga Setupati. The corridor has impressive proportions. It measures 640 feet in the north and south, 400 feet in the west and east and is nearly 7 metres tall.

Kothandaramaswamy Temple

This temple is more than a thousand years old and is dedicated to Lord Ram. It is on an island and surrounded by the Bay of Bengal and Gulf of Mannar. As per legend it was in this temple that Vibhishanan, the younger brother of Ravana surrendered to Lord Rama, who later crowned the former to rule Sri Lanka.

Ram Sethu Bridge

The viewpoint of Ram Sethu bridge is also located near the temple. Note that the legendary bridge is now under water and hence cannot be directly seen. We will only see the area under which the remains of the bridge are still under water.

Danushkodi

Next in the Rameshwaram tour is the incredibly beautiful beach at Danushkodi, a thriving town destroyed by a tsunami. It is one of the best white sand beaches of India. It is located at the confluence of Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

Floating Stone

We will visit the Hanuman temple to see one piece of the floating stone used to build Ram Sethu bridge. The Five faced Hanuman temple has the face of Hanuman in the middle along with faces of Lord Narasimha, Lord Adivaraha, Lord Garuda and Lord Hayagriva on the sides.
