Lost gem of the Spice Route

Two thousand years ago, the port of Muziris thrummed with the voices of traders from Rome, Arabia, Greece, and China — all drawn by the scent of black pepper and the promise of gold. This full-day journey from Kochi retraces the vanished harbour that once made Kerala a global trading hub. The route unfolds like a mosaic of cultures: India’s first mosque that still glows with a centuries-old lamp, a fiery goddess temple echoing with drums of ancient ritual, and the quiet dignity of a Jewish synagogue beside weavers’ looms. Between these sacred spaces stand the ruins of forts, ancestral homes, and waterways that once carried spices and stories across oceans.

Cheraman Juma Masjid, Kodungallur

Believed to be India’s first mosque (built in 629 CE), it was founded by local ruler Cheraman Perumal after his fabled visit to Mecca. Its traditional Kerala architecture and calm ambience symbolize Kerala’s long-standing religious harmony. Highlight: The mosque’s lamp, kept burning continuously for centuries, is said to have been lit with coconut oil — shared by Hindu temples nearby

Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple

Dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali, this ancient temple represents Kerala’s indigenous faith traditions. The Bharani Festival, known for its vibrant rituals, is among the oldest in South India.

Muziris Heritage Museum Cluster

Visit the Muziris Heritage Project, India’s largest archaeological and heritage conservation project. Stops include: Paliyam Palace and Nalukettu – former residence of the Paliath Achans, hereditary prime ministers of the Kochi royal family. Paliyam Chapel Museum – exhibits on the multicultural past of Muziris. Kottappuram Fort Ruins – built by the Portuguese in the 16th century; offers lovely views of the Periyar River.

Kerala Lunch

Enjoy a homely Kerala Sadya meal which is a vegetarian feast on banana leaf, at a local restaurant.

Chendamangalam Synagogue

Visit one of India’s oldest synagogues (17th century), reflecting the life of Kerala’s Jewish community. The area also has small-scale handloom units, where artisans still weave cotton on wooden looms.

Paravur Backwater

Take a heritage boat cruise through the Periyar backwaters — a peaceful way to see rural Kerala life and glimpse the waterways that once carried ships laden with pepper, pearls, and silk.
